What is the most confusing question on the Florida Massage License Application?
“Are you applying for licensure as a Massage Therapist by Endorsement or as a Massage Therapist by Examination?”
Most therapists assume if they are transferring their license from another state, they are applying as an Endorsement candidate.
This is not always the case.
I receive calls and emails weekly from future Florida therapists who were grandfathered into licensure in another state, practice in a state with no licensing requirements, or are just confused by the lack of information regarding the Florida massage license process.
Some have already applied and checked the wrong box and now have a letter from the Board of Massage. The letter usually says: “You do not qualify for Endorsement.” Then it instructs them to either change to Examination or retract their application. This causes panic and delays for applicants.
To help clear up some confusion, I have created an infographic to help you determine the method of licensure you qualify for.

Ivy, thanks for that great graphic! I’ve been in practice in Tennessee for 18 years. In 2000, when I completed my 550 hour program board exams were not necessary. When they became a condition for licensure, I was grandfathered in. Can you tell me if that would carry any weight when applying for licensure in Florida? Many thanks!

I have yet to see a person get a license without an exam, no matter how long they have been practicing. But, I always recommend calling and asking.
If you do need to take it, I offer a study plan on a separate website that helps people in your situation at least once a week. I know it can be done.
